Solar grants in West Yorkshire: what is real in 2026 and 2027
Most homeowners in West Yorkshire will not get a cash grant for solar panels. Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Calderdale have Warm Homes: Local Grant funding for lower-income homes with an EPC of D to G; Kirklees is not on the GOV.UK list. For everyone else the real help is 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, the Smart Export Guarantee and the Warm Homes Loan Scheme.

The short answer: most owner-occupiers in West Yorkshire will not get a cash grant for solar panels, and the real help is 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. There is one council-run grant, the Warm Homes: Local Grant, for lower-income households in homes with a poor EPC. Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Calderdale have funding. Kirklees is not on the GOV.UK list. Everything below is as of 3 November 2026and checked against GOV.UK and the councils’ own pages; grant schemes change, so the date matters.
The Warm Homes: Local Grant, council by council
The Warm Homes: Local Grant is government money, run by councils in England from 2025 to 2028, for insulation, low-carbon heating and solar panels at no cost to the household. You usually need a household income of £36,000 or less, or an income-related benefit, or to live in a selected postcode, and the home needs an EPC rating of D, E, F or G. Owner-occupiers and private tenants can apply; landlords contribute to the cost. Each council runs its own scheme and appoints its own installers, which is why we point you to the right door rather than quote for it.
- Leeds City Council: £5.96 million allocated. Delivered by Sustainable Building Services and Groundwork Yorkshire. Household income under £36,000 or income-related benefits, or selected postcodes, and an EPC of D to G. Council website or email homeenergyhelp@leeds.gov.uk.
- Bradford Council: £6.33 million allocated. The council approved its Warm Homes: Local Grant scheme in June 2025 at the full allocated value. Council website.
- Wakefield Council: £1.5 million allocated. Listed on the GOV.UK allocation with £1,499,667. Check the council for whether applications are open. Council website.
- Calderdale Council: £3.2 million allocated. Listed on the GOV.UK allocation with £3,206,150. Check the council for whether applications are open. Council website.
- Kirklees Council: does not appear on the GOV.UK list of successful local authorities. Check with the council before counting on it. Council website.
Allocations are from the GOV.UK: Warm Homes: Local Grant successful local authorities. Having an allocation does not mean applications are open today: several councils have paused intake when a funding tranche is spent, so check the council page before you plan around it. You can check your eligibility and apply at GOV.UK; the council usually contacts you within ten working days to arrange a survey.
ECO4: closes 31 December 2026
The Energy Company Obligation is funded by the energy suppliers for households on qualifying benefits. It mostly pays for insulation and heating, with solar included in some cases. ECO4 has been extended once, to 31 December 2026, and there will be no ECO5; the Warm Homes Plan takes over. If you are on a qualifying benefit and have not used it, ask your energy supplier before December.
The Warm Homes Loan Scheme: a loan, not a grant
For homeowners who do not meet the income test, the government’s Warm Homes Loan Scheme offers low-interest loans of up to £15,000 for solar panels and up to £15,000 for a home battery, with no income test. The government gives the lender a grant that must be passed on to you as a lower interest rate. Loans run through participating lenders, who make their own credit and affordability decisions, and the installation must be by an MCS-certified installer. It is a loan, so you repay it. We do not currently offer finance ourselves; if you want to use the scheme, ask the lender first and we will make sure the quote has what it needs.
0% VAT until 31 March 2027: the help every home gets
Solar panels, home batteries and their installation are zero-rated for VAT in Great Britain until 31 March 2027. It applies to every home, with no income test and nothing to claim: it is simply off the price. From 1 April 2027 the rate is 5%, confirmed in the Budget on 28 October 2026. The rate is set by the tax point, normally the invoice date, so the job has to be installed and invoiced before the deadline; a deposit does not lock the rate on the balance. On a £10,000 system that is £500 more from April 2027. See the VAT deadline page.
The Smart Export Guarantee: income, not a grant
Licensed suppliers must pay you for electricity you export from an MCS-certified system. Rates run from a few pence to around 15p a unit depending on the supplier and whether you have a battery. Our calculator assumes 8p. The right tariff depends on your supplier and your set-up, and the installer talks it through at the survey. For most working households the bigger gain is to store the export in a battery and use it in the evening instead of buying it back at 26.32p: the battery guide has the sums.
Offers of free solar panels
If a company offers you free panels outside the council schemes above, ask who owns the panels, who keeps the export income, what happens when you sell the house, and what the lease on your roof says. Some of these arrangements are legitimate; all of them are contracts, not grants.
As of 3 November 2026. Allocations and eligibility rules are taken from GOV.UK and the councils’ own pages on that date. Scheme intake opens and closes with funding, so confirm with the council before planning around a grant.
What to do next
If you think you qualify for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, apply through GOV.UK or your council first. If you do not, the sensible move is a fixed quote with 0% VAT before 31 March 2027: book a free survey and a local MCS-certified installer measures up. What drives the price is covered in the cost guide, and the Leeds page covers the city’s housing and the council scheme in more detail.
