What you get

Businesses are where solar makes the most sense

A home exports most of its solar because nobody is in. A warehouse at Thorpe Park, a workshop in Elland or a farm shop outside Wetherby uses electricity exactly when the roof is generating. That one fact is why a commercial array pays back in around 5 years while a domestic one takes ten.

We take the enquiry, check the roof and the bill stack up, and book the site survey. A local MCS-certified installer sizes the system from your half-hourly data, handles the Northern Powergrid application and the installation, and hands over a monitoring dashboard your finance team can read.

Included in every commercial install

Roof, structure, distribution board, and your half-hourly data if you have it. Done around your working day.
Sized from your bill
An array that covers a sensible share of your daytime load. Never the biggest one that fits the roof.
MCS-certified installation
Installed and commissioned by a local MCS-certified installer, with the Northern Powergrid application handled.
Monitoring
Generation and consumption on a dashboard, so whoever signs it off can see the saving each month.
Minimal disruption
Roof work scheduled around your operation. Most installs need no downtime.

The MCS certificate, the commissioning documents and what your accountant needs for capital allowances.
Why the numbers work for a business

A business uses its power when the roof is making it

80%

of the solar used on site

Daytime operations line up with generation. Little is exported.

46 kW

for a unit paying £1,500 a month

About 39,100 kWh a year, covering roughly half of what the building uses.

~5 yrs

typical payback

Then it is electricity at no cost for the rest of the panels’ 25-year life.

Indicative, as of 3 November 2026. Assumes 850 kWh per kW a year, a business unit rate of 28p, 80% daytime self-use, 8p export and £1,050 per kW installed. Every figure is replaced by the written quote after the site survey.

Straight answers

Commercial solar questions from West Yorkshire

Not here? The number at the top reaches a person who can answer it.

How much do commercial solar panels cost?
It is priced per kW installed and falls as the system grows, which is why a unit roof is cheaper per panel than a house. The calculator on this page sizes a system from your monthly bill and shows the cost, the saving and the payback using the assumptions in its note. The written quote after the site survey replaces every one of those figures.
Why is commercial payback so much shorter than domestic?
Because a business uses its electricity in daylight, when the panels are generating. Around 80% of the solar goes straight into cutting the bill instead of being exported for 8p, and the cost per kW is lower on a big roof. A unit paying £1,500 a month uses roughly 64,286 kWh a year; a 46 kW array covering about half of it saves around £9,384 a year and pays back in about 5.1 years, against ten or more for a house.
Is our roof strong enough?
Most steel-framed units and modern flat roofs carry an array without trouble, but it is checked rather than assumed. The site survey includes a structural look at the roof and, where the numbers are tight, a structural engineer signs it off before anything is ordered. Asbestos cement roofs, common on older units in Bradford and Huddersfield, usually need replacing before panels go on, and the survey says so.
What about the grid connection?
Anything over 3.68 kW per phase needs a G99 application to Northern Powergrid, the network operator for the whole of West Yorkshire, before it can connect. The installer submits it as part of the job. Northern Powergrid has up to 45 working days to answer; most come back sooner, and the installation is scheduled around the reply.
Is there a grant or tax relief for a business?
There is no cash grant for commercial solar in England. What there is comes through the tax system: the Annual Investment Allowance gives 100% relief on qualifying plant up to £1 million a year, and companies can use the 50% first-year allowance on special-rate assets, which is where solar panels sit. Your accountant confirms the treatment; the installer provides the paperwork they need.
Can we add a battery or chargers for the vans?
Yes, and the survey designs them in from the start if you want them. A commercial battery moves cheap or solar electricity into the expensive hours, and workplace EV chargers qualify for the Workplace Charging Scheme at 75% up to £500 per socket, so the fleet charges on daytime generation.
